Taking songs back to the wild

Will and Guy on the Ox Drove to Alton Abbey
Will (AWalkAroundBritain) and Guy (Doctor of Music) have a new project: Hayward & Parsons.

The peripetetic performers say: "For many years, British folk songs have been collected and locked away. Hayward & Parsons release them to their native environments, singing them at their sources, to re-wild the song-scape of Britain.

"We travel on foot, following ancient pathways, foraging wild food, sleeping on soil, drinking holy water and cooking with fire."

The song of pilgrimage is a living tradition and mighty joy. This week (on May 27th) they started from Winchester to Canterbury along the ancient Pilgrims Way.

Aural illusions in June's FolkCast show

Things aren't always what they seem to be in the newly released June podcast show from FolkCast.

Americana that's not from America...
A strange hunting accident in which the victim's ghost appears as a witness for the defence...
Romans from Croatia in the Lake District...
Three songs with no words...
Blood in the kitchen, blood in the hall...
And we march from the Highlands in the company of Bonnie Prince Charlie to hear a song that's all about him, but not in favour of him...
All this and more in a mind-expanding edition of ... FolkCast!

Home of the best in folk, folk-rock, singer-songwriter and roots music.

Singing gardener celebrates "mundane miracles"

Singer-songwriter Gregory Alan Isakov has announced an eighteen-date tour of Europe across October and November 2014 in support of his new album The Weatherman. This will be Isakov's first tour in Europe since the album's release in late 2013 and will commence with five UK headline shows.
Gregory combines careers in music and horticulture

Recorded and mixed outside the quiet mountain town of Nederland, Colorado, in the USA, The Weatherman was produced by Isakov along with Jamie Mefford

Of making the record, Isakov says: “I wanted to make something that felt genuine. We recorded everything with analogue gear and mixed it on tape, which gives the songs a raw and vulnerable feeling.

“The idea of a weatherman is really powerful. There’s a guy on television or on the radio telling us the future, and nobody cares. It’s this daily mundane miracle, and I think the songs I chose are about noticing the beauty in normal, everyday life.”

Inspiration? Denver TV weatherman Ed Bowman
…-...

The Weatherman is Isakov’s third full-length release and follows 2009’s This Empty Northern Hemisphere. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and now calling Colorado home, Isakov is a lifelong traveler.  With a degree in horticulture, Isakov balances the art of making and exhibiting his music with the art of gardening and connecting to the land.

Steeleye officially Spanning the web - at last!

These days every band has a website before they have an album, a gig or even their own t-shirt stall, but one of the giants of the folk world has been officially missing from the W.W.W. – until now!

At last Steeleye Span have their very own official website. Up until now the folk-rock giants have either nestled under the wing of their record company with a page on the Park Records website, or relied on dedicated fan Richard Hollis to keep people up to date on his Unofficial Steeleye Span site, which has been running since 1997, a time before Google even existed (no, really!).

Now the new official Steeleye Span website is up and running: http://steeleyespan.org.uk

And Steeleye play their first UK gig with their new fiddle player, Jessie-May Smart, who has stepped into Peter Knight's shoes after he left the band to concentrate on his other musical projects including Gigspanner and Feast Of Fiddles.

Like Peter, Jessie is a classically-trained violinist, and she has a background in jazz and musical theatre, playing in the West End and touring with Katie Melua. She's also been part of the band on TV's The X-Factor and Strictly Come Dancing!

Jessie-May Smart
Jessie takes to the stage with Steeleye at the Albert Halls in Bolton (tel: 01204 334400) on May 22nd, having debuted with them earlier in the week in Ireland. She will be with the band for Maddie Prior's Stepping Stones festival in Cumbria in June, and for their tour in the autumn.

Jim Reynolds goes SxSW(UK)

Jim Reynolds is a guitarist and singer who writes and plays an eclectic mix of music. The individual pieces tap into blues, ragtime, rhythm and blues, music hall and folk traditions. Some are extremely sensitive songs about life, people and relationships, while others are tongue in cheek.

His albums are also sprinkled with classics from the likes of J.J. Cale, Nick Drake, John Martyn, Roy Orbison, the Ink Spots, Jelly Roll Morton and Jimmy Rogers.

Having played abroad and in the U.K., especially in Bristol, the South West, Wales, the Midlands and recently the South East, at clubs, pubs and festivals, he has honed his singing and playing, creating a rich and cohesive sound. His finely crafted songs and guitar are a pleasure to listen to and live performances are always memorable. He's on tour this month, heading south by south west...
