If anyone can, Kan can

New instrumental folk group Kan (Brian Finnegan of Flook, Aidan O'Rourke from Lau, Ian Stephenson and Jim Goodwin) is heading out on their maiden tour of England beginning next week, with their debut album set for release soon.

KAN (photo by Louis De Carlo)
Brian’s grounded in the Irish tradition, Aidan in the Scottish, and both are highly accomplished improvisers and celebrated composers with a brace of solo CDs each, and neither afraid to take risks and explore new sonic frontiers.

Yorkshire guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Ian Stephenson has worked with his band 422, with Kathryn Tickell and Chris Stout. He is teamed with rhythm master Jim Goodwin, drummer and percussionist with the Halle and Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

The boys from Kan (the Mayan god of seeds, trivia fans!) have been mates for years, meeting through their love for traditional music at sessions and then later guested on one another’s records.

Meanwhile, Ian Stephenson's solo album has just been released. More details here.

The Men from U.K.U.L.E.L.E

FolkCast's plans to form the Vuvuzela Orchestra of Great Britain have come to nothing, but The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is going international, with shows scheduled in the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, Luxembourg, and Germany, as well as the UK.

Writes the band orchestra: "On our return to England we are really looking forward to a special gig at Cecil Sharp House in Camden on 11 November: 'Waly Waly on the Ukulele - Ukulele settings of Cecil Sharp'. This will be an evening of UOGB arrangements of songs collected by Cecil Sharp. The concert marks the end of Sharp's 150th birthday year."

Mabon on Celtic collection

Welsh band MABON have been chosen to appear on a new box set CD featuring some of the finest artists in Celtic music today.
Compiled by musician and broadcaster Mary Ann Kennedy, presenter of BBC Radio 3’s World on 3 and BBC Scotland’s Global Gathering, the triple CD set Beginner’s Guide to Celtic will be released on November 1 on the Nascente label (part of the Demon Music Group, the UK’s largest independent record company).
The 44-track CD traces the history of Celtic music featuring key acts from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Isle of Man, Cornwall and Brittany. The first CD, “Sparks”, showcases the icons of Celtic music – the original sparks that ignited the Celtic music scene while CD2 “Bright Fire” focuses on “bright burning contemporary acts.”
Mabon’s File Under Biddley track will appear on CD3 - “Beacons” – which highlights acoustic acts that “mix influences, break down boundaries and cross borders”. Mabon’s acclaimed Interceltic sound, which takes on board influences from central and eastern Europe as well as kletzmer, was deemed perfect for the recording which also features such great acts as Cerys Matthews, Capercaillie, Karine Polwart, John McCusker , Peatbog Faeries, Salsa Celtica, Altan, Brenda Wootton and Battlefield Band.
Says Mary Ann Kennedy:”This compilation represents the broadest possible side to Celtic music and reclaims the territory from all that Celtic pish! When we were researching artists for the album Mabon stood out as a breath of fresh air in Welsh music.”
On Monday (October 25) Mabon release their own live album, Live at the Grand Pavilion - capturing all the energy and pizzazz of their acclaimed live show and underlining their fast-rising status on the folk roots and world music scene.
Led by the indecently talented young accordionist and tunes meister Jamie Smith, Mabon have won over festival and theatre audiences across Europe with their insatiable and unique blend of InterCeltic music and rabble rousing funk folk.
Back on Welsh home turf last autumn the all-male six piece recorded Live at the Grand Pavilion on the final atmospheric “homecoming” night of their buoyant OK UK tour, in Porthcawl, on the South Wales coast. Accompanying the 10-track CD is a free bonus DVD filmed on the same tour at the Quay Arts Centre on the Isle of Wight – making a complete 107 minute value package perfectly showcasing their exemplary musicianship and intoxicating live act.
Drawing inspiration from the traditional music of the Celtic countries, 27-year old Jamie’s compositions see jigs and reels jostling for space alongside other dance-related forms including Breton an dro, French mazurka and Galician muinera in an exuberant, feelgood show.
Mabon (meaning autumn equinox), also features Young Scottish Musician of the Year finalist Calum Stewart on wooden flute and pipes and stand-out fiddler Oli Wilson-Dickson (Ruth Angell deputises on fiddle on the new album). Keeping it in the family, Jamie’s father Derek Smith, who founded the original Mabon, plays acoustic guitar and the line-up is completed by Matt Downer on bass and the irrepressible Iolo Whelan on drums and percussion.
Next week Mabon are off to Copenhagen where they will showcase for Wales at the world music trade fair.
On November 4, Mabon resume their autumn UK tour with dates in Cardiff, Stamford, Hebden Bridge, Worcester, Uley, Swindon and Bristol.

Battlefield Band celebrates Chilean miners' rescue

This track came about after three of the band were working in the studio. During a break from recording they were watching the rescue of the Chilean miners and, when the last miner made his safe return to the surface, the boys decided to write this tune - a celebration as opposed to the many other tunes and songs written about mining tragedies.

Unexpected Guests

"We had a Saturday night off, so we thought we'd drop by," declared the surprise support act opening for Ken Nicol and Ashley Hutchings on Saturday evening in Clitheroe. Who was this mystery duo? Only Jerry Donahue and Doug Morter!

The support slot had been arranged at nearly the last moment, so there was no time for pre-publicity. That meant that the busy crowd in the smart, modern theatre was unaware that Jerry (ex-Fairport Convention) and Doug (former Magna Carta member) would be doing a short set. Added value!

Doug is also one of the massed ranks of ex-Albion Band members, and was clearly delighted to be reunited with the band's founder, Ashley: "My ex-governor ... The Guvnor!"

Jerry and Doug's set was mainly drawn from Doug's pen, augmented with electric guitar from the Californian legend, Jerry - although as we discovered, Jerry actually splits his time between homes in Hollywood and .... West Bradford near Clitheroe, Lancashire!

Following a short interval the show as billed got under way and - even though I must declare an interest as both Ken and Ashley are friends - what a show it is. As a singer-songwriter duo, K&A work well on record but really sparkle on stage. There are times of genuine magnificence in songs such as Raggle Taggle Lad and The Song Of Two Bridges, both from their 2010 album Copper, Russet & Gold.

Ashley plays acoustic bass guitar and adds his distinctive vocals, as well as his lovely and evocative recitations of poetry and prose, while Ken is the musical powerhouse, his fingers flying on the fret-boards of a trio of acoustic six-strings (no, not all at the same time). His playing on his solo musical piece The Bridge was mesmerising.

Towards the conclusion of the varied set the pair were joined by vocalist and guitarist Becky Mills (ex- Waking The Witch), whose fabulous voice fitted into the duo's sound like a jigsaw puzzle piece to complete the picture. Becky - who, along with Abby Lathe, features on the album -  shouldn't be left in the wings for so long, chaps. The way her vocals click together with Ken's lead is just right, with Ashley's bass (both vocal and stringed) filling out the sound to make a very satisfying whole.

The Copper, Russet & Gold tour continues right through until February, and is a highly recommended night of quality, crafted musicianship. I can't guarantee any surprise guests, but simply as a duo K&A are a delight.

Gandalf's early early Halloween show

Sleepy Hollow legends Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams will descend from the mists of the Hudson Highlands to host their annual.

Granted, they descend 10 days early for a Halloween concert, but descend they do!

Thursday October 21st: The Grand Slambovian ~ Extraterrestrial ~ Hillbilly ~ Pirate Ball Electric Ballroom, 184 Camden High Street, London NW1 8QP
Tel 0207 4859006 Tickets £19.50 adv (£23.00 on door)– From 8pm

Formed in Sleepy Hollow, New York in the late nineties, Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams' live shows are where the real magic comes down, earning them critical acclaim as well as a fiercely loyal following. On stage they create an enchanting atmosphere, using traditional folk instruments, electric guitars, the occasional theremin and the distinctive singing and songwriting of Joziah Longo. Citing influences as diverse as Hank Williams, Dylan, Bowie, Incredible String Band and early Pink Floyd, the band's music is a mental roller coaster of whimsical and thought-provoking songs.

The Circus band includes founding members Sharkey McEwen (guitars, mandolin, backing vocals), Joziah Longo (lead vocals, guitars, harmonica), Tink Lloyd (accordion, cello, flute, theremin), Tony Zuzulo (percussion), and touring members Chen Longo (bass) and Orien Longo (keyboards, backing vocals).

A date with a monkey ... or three

The devilish, dervish-like and delicious 3 Daft Monkeys (as featured on FolkCast 054) are releasing a new album and hitting the road for an autumn gig tour of England.

Their new studio album, The Antiquated & The Arcane (out on 1st November) draws heavily from 3 Daft Monkeys experiences on the road and takes the listener on "a rollercoaster journey via the frenetic, the serene and the surreal".

Named in homage to the band’s local “Antiquated and the Arcane Society” where weird and wacky characters meet to talk about unusual or strange occurrences in Cornwall throughout history, it is an anthology of stories both shared with, and experienced by, the Monkeys.

With a line-up consisting of Fiddle (Athene), 12 String Guitar (Tim) and Bass (Jamie), 3 Daft Monkeys weave world music influences around classic folk melodies.

The band's DIY approach to the music industry has seen them sell thousands of copies of each of their previous three albums without the backing of any record labels or widespread media attention (maybe FolkCast played a small part...).

Their reputation as one of the best live acts on the circuit has been earned from almost non-stop touring, whether that be on 40 date tours across the length and breadth of the UK, or playing to over 20,000 people at festivals including Cropredy, which led to them receiving the rare honour of being invited back the following year.
