Jon Boden's Jukebox

Jon Boden is setting out to record a different folk song, every day, for an entire year.

Jon's A Folk Song A Day project starts today (24 June - Midsummer's Day) and he's also aiming to improve the status of social singing in this country and provide a resource for anyone interested in singing traditional songs.

Jon said: "I have always thought of myself as first and foremost an unaccompanied singer so it was quite a shock to me to realise that, although I have now made 10 albums, I have never included a solo unaccompanied track on any of them."

"It seemed high time I rectified that situation and [this] is an opportunity for me to record my whole repertoire of songs without worrying about making any of them commercial, stylistically original, or fitting them in to a particular album concept."

You can read Jon's full mission statement and, eventually, hear all the songs at

Ken Nicol quits Steeleye Span

Shock news! After almost eight years, FolkCast co-host Ken Nicol has decided to leave Steeleye Span to spend more time on his solo projects.

Ken (pictured left) exclusively announces his decision in the latest edition of FolkCast, the independent podcast covering the best of folk, folk-rock, singer-songwriter and roots-based music. And there's also a special, extra podcast featuring an extended interview with Ken, in which he goes into the background of the amicable split.

Meanwhile, Steeleye Span will go on, and the band is already planning tours for 2011. Ken and FolkCast wish them all the best for the future.

'No Masters' in party mood

No Masters, the northern-based song-writing co-operative, was formed by John Tams and Jim Boyes in 1990. It sought out writers, performers and musicians who were, in their various ways, seeking to celebrate and extend those bits of the people's tradition invariably described as 'radical' or 'political'.

Since then, its membership has expanded to include outstanding writers and performers such as Mike Waterson, Jo Freya, Lester Simpson, Barry Coope, Fi Fraser, Ray Hearne, Chumbawamba, and the late Lal Waterson.

Now No Masters has reached 20 years of age and is celebrating with a works outing!

The grown-up, twenty-year-old many-headed hydra that is the No Masters Co-op will gather to entertain you at Saltaire's Victoria Hall on 9th July. It'll be a real big-top circus of a show featuring Coope, Boyes & Simpson, Chumbawamba, O'Hooley & Tidow, Jo Freya, Fi Fraser, John Tams and Ray Hearne. A lot of a do, in fact.

Joe Giltrap

Irish-born Joe Giltrap plays a mix of Irish traditional and contemporary music garnished with story and song accompanied by guitar, bodhran and harmonica. A singer songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Giltrap’s work has been described by Nick Dalton in the Sunday Express as, 'Thinking man's Celtic Music’. Brampton NOT live

Brampton Live 2010, the biggest folk roots festival in the north of England, has been cancelled.

The 16th Brampton festival was due to take place near Carlisle between July 16-18 with a bumper line-up of artists from the UK, America and Canada. But founders Ken and Sue Bradburn and their fellow directors of Brampton Live Ltd, Mick North and Steve Henderson have issued the following statement:
“We are saddened to announce that the 2010 festival has been cancelled. The combination of reduced funding, decreasing sponsorship and disappointing ticket sales has meant we feel it would be irresponsible to continue.  If we were to do so, we would not be able to meet our obligations in refunding ticket holders, stall holders and traders. These obligations will be met over the coming weeks.”

The event’s future is unknown at this time but the directors added:
“We would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the many volunteers who have given freely of their time over the last fifteen years as well as all our performers and other supporters past and present - plus a big thank you to our patron Maddy Prior who has always been a huge friend of the festival.”
The centrepiece of the 2010 festival was due to be the official premiere and CD launch of the All Along the Wall show featuring five top songwriters and two poets and celebrating Hadrian’s Wall.

The directors pledged to continue with this: “On a positive note we intend to proceed with the All Along the Wall project which was specially commissioned for the festival. A live performance CD will be available in July and other performances are planned, hopefully including The Sage, Gateshead and a range of other venues.”

FolkCast says: This is very bad news. Sadly, this is not the first time Brampton has fallen foul of financial problems. See
here for our previous post on the subject.

Money's clearly too tight to mention everywhere, so it's likely that Brampton will not be that last festival to fold this year.
